Wedding garter

A garter was originally a strip of fabric used to tie the stockings above the knee in order to hold them.

Since then, the garter has become an element of wedding intimate lingerie. And although it no longer ties up anything, it became the subject of one of the traditional wedding games, a kind of analogue of a wedding bouquet. All unmarried guests gather behind the groom, and without looking, he throws his bride’s garter back over his right shoulder. Whoever catches it is likely to marry soon. It is believed that the garter of the bride brings happiness.

Another wedding game is an auction. The bride stands on a chair. Guests are divided into two teams: boys and girls. Teams make bets in turn. When one of the guys makes a bet, the bride lifts her skirt a little bit. When one of the girls she lows it. The one on whose stake the edge of the skirt rises above the garter wins. He receives the prize - the garter, which he must untie only with his teeth without hands. And the newlyweds get a box of money that they can spend on their honeymoon.

Most often, garters are white. Sometimes blue. By tradition, the bride should have something new, something old, something borrowed and something blue.

 Garters are often also made of lace. Especially if the bride has a lace wedding dress. Some designers even specially embroider a garter in harmony with the lace of the entire dress. Floral lace motifs can be adorned with silvered beads, pearls, rhinestones or feathers.
